Misfits is a comedy-drama about a group of outsiders, forced to work in a community service programme, that get stuck with special powers after a freak flash storm. The show premiered on 12 November 2009 on E4. The show is produced by Clerkenwell Films. The series characters are superficially similar to archetypes from teen dramas (such as E4's youth series Skins and 1980s film, The Breakfast Club) in that many social groups are represented in a scenario that facilitates their interaction. Characters Curtis (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), a rising sports star, whose goal was to compete in the 2012 Olympics. His career is left in tatters after being caught with an illegal substance and made an example of in the eyes of the law. Curtis is forced to trade his tracksuit for a jumpsuit and take part in Community Payback. Curtis's special power is similar to that of time travel, in that the character is able to rewind and replay past events in order to change their outcome. Kelly (Lauren Socha) is portrayed as the stereotypical chav with a volatile temper who wouldn't look out of place on The Jeremy Kyle Show. After the storm strikes, Kelly soon discovers that she has the power to hear peoples’ thoughts, which means that anyone that makes a snap judgement on Kelly’s appearance is more than likely to get a head-butt... Alisha (Antonia Thomas) is a party girl who uses her looks and smile to wrap men around her little finger. Alisha develops the ability to affect the thoughts of others by putting them into a deep state of lust when they come into contact with her skin. Simon (Iwan Rheon) is a shy character and a social outcast who was either ignored or bullied at school. He may have been given community service for arson or sexual assault. Simon lacks the confidence to develop relationships, to make friends or to live a normal life, which leads to the special power of invisibility when ignored. This is a popular character device in super-hero fiction [1]. Nathan (Robert Sheehan) is a quick-witted, cocky and borderline annoying Irishman although, beneath this brash veneer, Nathan isn’t as unemotionally untouchable as he makes out. Despite being caught in the storm with the rest of the gang, and much to his annoyance, Nathan is the only Misfit without a super-power. But that doesn’t stop him trying to find out what his power is in a series of more and more outlandish tests. His sense of social justice and democratic spirit however is stronger than the other misfits. |
